8 ways to earn more Avios points

If you are looking for ways to get more free flights then you are in the right place. Follow the hints and tips in this article and you could earn thousands of extra Avios points each year. The world is at your fingertips!

1. Convert your Tesco Clubcard points to Avios points

100 Tesco Clubcard points can be converted into 240 Avios points, so £10 of Clubcard vouchers can be converted into 2,400 Avios points. There are a whole host of ways to earn free Tesco Clubcard points, which you can then convert to Avios. There are also sometimes ‘Clubcard Boost’ offers, where the conversion rate temporarily increases from 100 Clubcard points = 240 Avios to 100 Clubcard points = 300 Avios.

2. Sign up for E-Rewards

Sign up for E-Rewards through the British Airways Executive Club and complete 1 survey and you will earn 750 Avios points. Sign up for E-Rewards through avios.com and complete 1 survey and you will earn another 750 Avios points (you have to sign up with a different email address).

3. Get the British Airways Amex credit card

You currently get a bonus of 3,000 Avios points when you sign up for the BA Amex and spend £500 in the first 3 months. You also get 1 Avios point per £1 spent.

4. Use the Avios Suitcase Facebook app

You can earn around 500 free Avios points by completing simple challenges with the Avios Suitcase Facebook app. For example, you can earn 50 Avios points just by ‘linking’  the app to your avios.com account. To complete some of the tasks you need to tweet messages and share links on Facebook. To avoid spamming your friends, it is probably best to use alternative Twitter and Facebook accounts!

5. Earn Avios points with TopCashBack

TopCashBack is an online portal which helps you earn cashback on your online shopping. You can also earn lots of free cashback by signing up for free trials with certain companies.

The cashback you earn can be withdrawn as cash, but also withdrawn as Avios. 1p of cashback gets you 1 Avios, so £10 of cashback equals 1,000 Avios. However, it is better to withdraw your cashback as Tesco Clubcard points. 1p of cashback can be withdrawn as 1 Clubcard point, which then converts to 2.5 Avios points, so £10 of cashback gets you 2,500 Avios points. There is an annual limit of £50 cashback that can be withdrawn to Clubcard points (which converts to 12,000 Avios points).

You currently get a bonus of 20,000 Amex Membership Rewards points when you sign up for the Amex Preferred Rewards Gold and spend £2,000 in the first 3 months. These points can then be converted into 20,000 Avios points. You also earn 1 MR point (1 Avios) per £1 spent. There is an annual fee of £125, but it is free for the first year. It is best to sign up for the card and then cancel after 11 months.

8. Collect Avios with Shell Drivers’ Club

You get 50 Avios points just for signing up to the Shell Drivers’ Club. You then earn 10 Avios points for each 20 litres of Shell fuel purchased. To get your Shell Drivers’ Club account your first need to collect a Shell Drivers’ Club card from a Shell petrol station. You then need to register your card online (alternatively you can register on the Shell app). Finally, you need to select avios.com or BA Executive Club as your rewards preference.

1,000 free Avios points with Iberia using the Hailo taxi app (Android users only)

Iberia Airlines are currently running a promotion where you can get 1,000 free Avios points by downloading the taxi app Hailo. The promotion usually only offers a 400 Avios bonus, but it has increased to 1,000 Avios until 27th February 2015.

In Spain

If you live in Spain, or happen to be passing through, getting your 1,000 Avios is easy. All you need to do is download the Halo app, insert your Iberia Plus number and wait for the Avios to post to your account.

IOS

Android

You will also have to insert a debit/credit card number to set up an account, but this will not be charged unless you actually call a taxi.

Outside Spain

When you use Hailo outside Spain you will not be given the option to insert an Iberia Plus number, but it is still possible to get the 1,000 Avios points. All you need to instead is to trick the Hailo app into thinking that you are in Spain.

The step-by-step solution is as follows (note, this solution only works for Android users):

  1. Download the Hailo app
  2. Download the Fake GPS location app
  3. Use the Fake GPS location app to trick the Hailo app into thinking you are in Madrid. Note: “You should disable ‘use wireless networks’ options in location settings of your phone to avoid an issue with keeping faked location even after stopping the app”
  4. You will have to insert a debit/credit card number to set up an account. This will not be charged unless you actually call a taxi.
  5. Type your Iberia Plus number into the Hailo app using the pictorial instructions above.
  6. Wait for your 1,000 bonus Avios points to post to your account (it usually takes about a week).

(if you are not yet an Iberia Plus member you can sign up for a free account here)

Once the points have posted to your Iberia Plus account you can either hang on to them and spend them on an Iberia reward flight, or you can transfer them across to your British Airways Executive Club or avios.com accounts. Instructions for this transfer process are here.

I fully anticipate that some readers are going to encounter problems when trying to take advantage of this promotion. It certainly requires far greater technical wizardry than any offer I usually recommend. Please feel free to comment to let me know how you get on!

iPhone/IOS users: I am currently working on a solution to this problem for IOS users. At the moment, I can’t find a suitable GPS location faker. The only other solution is to jailbreak the phone, which isn’t realistic for the average blog reader. Again, if you have any tips then please let me know….

Win dinner for 4 at the Chef’s Table at the Savoy Grill by converting Tesco Clubcard points to British Airways Avios points

On Saturday I wrote about a promotion where you can get 1,000 free miles and 30% bonus miles when you Auto Opt In to convert Tesco Clubcard points to Virgin miles between 30th January and 31st March 2015. I also wrote about a weak avios.com promotion where you can get entries into a competition to win more Avios points when you convert Tesco Clubcard points to avios.com Avios points.

It turns out British Airways are also running a promotion in conjunction with Tesco Clubcard. If you convert a minimum of 500 Clubcard points into BA Avios between 30th January and 28th February 2015 you will receive an entry into a competition to win dinner for 4 at the Chef’s Table at the Savoy Grill.

tesco british airways conversion bonus

There is really nothing special about this offer. Unless you are converting your Clubcard points into British Airways Avios points to purchase a particular reward flight, I wouldn’t bother.

You would be much better off selecting to Auto Opt In to convert your Clubcard points to Virgin miles. This will earn you 1,000 free Virgin miles and a 30% conversion bonus on top. You can always opt-out again at a later stage. More details about the Virgin offer are here.

Note:

  • you can sign up for Tesco Clubcard here.
  • you can sign up for the British Airways Executive Club here.

Win 1,500 Avios points by converting your Tesco Clubcard points to Avios

On Saturday morning I received an email from avios.com advertising a competition where they are giving away 500 prizes of 1,500 Avios points. For each £2.50 of Clubcard points you convert into 600 Avios points (between the 1st and 28th of February), you will receive one entry into the competition. You can convert points here.

The promotion is not yet advertised on the Avios website, but I assume it will appear soon (watch this space).

avios competition tesco clubcard

Quite frankly, this offer is pretty underwhelming. I usually hoard my Clubcard points and convert them to Avios when a better offer comes along – occasionally, Tesco and Avios run a 20% transfer bonus, meaning that for each 250 Clubcard points you convert you receive 720 Avios points (instead of the usual 600).

Nevertheless, if you were planning to transfer some Clubcard points to Avios points in the next few months, you might as well do it in February – you never know, you might win 1,500 Avios points!

Note: you only receive an entry to the prize draw if you convert your Clubcard points to an avios.com account. Converting Clubcard points into Avios in a British Airways Executive Club account will not get you an entry into the prize draw. You can sign up for for an avios.com account here.

1,000 Miles and More miles (or 1,000 Avios points) with Heathrow Rewards

Lufthansa Miles and More have teamed up with Heathrow Rewards to offer a bonus of 1,000 Heathrow Reward points when you sign up for a Heathrow Rewards card and spend £25 at Heathrow before 31st December 2015. Whilst the promotion is advertised by Lufthansa, the 1,000 Heathrow Reward points can actually be converted to various different air mile currencies:

  • 1,000 Miles and More miles
  • 1,000 Avios points with the British Airways Executive Club
  • 1,000 Avios points with an avios.com account
  • 1,000 Virgin Atlantic Flying Club miles
  • 1,000 Etihad Guest miles

heathrow rewards

Even if you aren’t a particularly frequent traveller, this is the kind of offer that you should probably be taking advantage of. You can sign up here. If you value Avios points at 1p then the 1,000 Avios point bonus is effectively a £10 saving on a £25 spend. You have until the end of the year to make the £25 spend – so sign up, even if you don’t know where (or if) you are going on holiday this summer!

Note: at the top of the page it will say ‘Join Heathrow Rewards and collect 100 points’. Don’t worry! This is the standard signup bonus. If you scroll down you will see the promotion code MM1. This is the Miles and More promotion code and will get you the 1,000 point sign up bonus.

Full information about the offer from Lufthansa is available on the Miles and More website.

1,500 Clubcard points (3,600 Avios points) on a £60 spend at Tesco

Tesco have teamed up with MoneySavingExpert to offer new customers a 1,500 Clubcard point bonus (which can be converted into 3,600 Avios points or 3,750 Virgin miles) on a £60 online grocery spend at Tesco.

To take advantage of the offer you need to enter the code XXRRRK at checkout. You will know that your code has been added because the following information will be added to your order:

tesco codeThe code is only valid on Tesco groceries – not merchandise from other Tesco departments. MoneySavingExpert report that you must choose a delivery slot (delivery costs £1-£6) or a click and collect slot (free) before 28th January because the code will expire, but you can see from the screenshot above that the code on my account appears to expire on 22nd February.

The terms and conditions also state that:

Infant milk formulae, tobacco products, stamps, National Lottery Scratchcards, Delivery Saver subscriptions and delivery or collection charges. The code can’t be used with any other code beginning with XX.

Only one code per household and per customer.

Getting 1,500 clubcard points off a £60 food shop represents huge value. 1,500 Clubcard points are worth £15 shopping at Tesco, or can be converted into 3,600 Avios points. If you value Avios points at 1p then you are effectively saving a whopping £36 on your shopping.

Note: if you already have an online account with Tesco then you should try the code XXJMMM. This will get you a bonus of 100 Clubcard points (240 Avios points) on a grocery spend of £40. This code expires on 22/02/2015.

Earn up to 10,000 Tesco Clubcard points (24,000 Avios points) each year by recycling printer cartridges

You can receive up to 100 Clubcard points (converts to 240 Avios points) for each printer cartridge that you recycle with Tesco. You are allowed to recycle 100 cartridges each year – so in theory you could earn yourself a cool 10,000 Clubcard points (24,000 Avios points) annually.
tesco printer cartridge recycling

To recycle your cartridges you first need to request Tesco recycling envelopes. When they arrive you simply pop your printer cartridge in the envelope, fill in your Clubcard details and put them in the post (postage is paid).

The list of eligible printer cartridges and their points values is here.

recycle printer cartridges

Of course, it would be difficult to get hold of 100 printer cartridges to recycle each year. Last year I earned 600 Clubcard points by recycling 6 printer cartridges.

There are other ways of taking advantage of the scheme, however – if you work in an office, are responsible for the printers/photocopiers and have access to cartridges then this is something you should definitely look into. Some people even go as far as buying empty cartridges on eBay just to recycle them. The scheme terms and conditions prohibit this, but I am not sure how it is enforced.
